On Saturday English Premier League leader Manchester United drew 1-1 during the 35th closing round allowing Chelsea to reduce the gap to only three points.
The points were scored by South American Roque Santa Cruz who opened the scoreboard in the 21st minute and Manchester’s goal came from the Argentinean Carlos Tevez in the 88th minute with a shooting to the net in combination with offensive midfielder Paul Scholes.
But the hero of the day was Chelsea’s goalkeeper Brad Friedel who played an exceptional game stopping some eminent goal shots above all when the visitors were hunting the draw desperately in the second half.
During the 79th minute Friedel stopped Tévez and later on Wayne Rooney as well as the Irish defense John O’Shea (86th) before the goal arrived. Before the 64th minute the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo threw a ball against a post. This unexpected result holds back Manchester’s run for the title, which previously seemed to be an easy task for the “Red Devils.”
On Thursday Chelsea won over Everton 0-1 and now had 78 points only three points shy of the current leader. The only goal of the game was that of Ghanaian Michael Essien during the first half of the game at the 41st minute.
On the other hand, Arsenal was left out of the competition for the title after being overrun by Reading 2-0. This game put an end to Arsenal’s five games without winning at the Emirates Stadium.
At last the Londoners managed to offer a victory to their supporters thanks to the good work of the Spaniard Cesc Fábregas who was defending the center of the field as well as Togolese Emmanuel Adebayor and of the Brazilian Gilberto; the ‘Gunners’, third in the general classification are situated seven points behind of the leader.
Liverpool achieved a new victory, this time against Fulham (0-2), with a total of eight points from Everton which is in fifth position in the battle for the title; situation which is not completely obscure as this allows them a pot for the next Champions League edition
Lastly; there is Bolton, which recently won over Middlesbrough 0-1 and was able to take a breath. Meantime, the Derby County continues in bad shape after losing to West Ham 2-1.
This Sunday, Aston Village sixth place of the classification board, sank even further down after losing to Birmingham (5-1), while Newcastle took air after winning 2-0 over Sunderland.

Arsenal seem to be getting their form back. Unluckily, it’s a little bit too late in the seasons because with few games remaining it would be hard to catch up with the league leaders. Unless some form of miracle happens and the top 3 teams lose points drastically then they should forget the title race.
I think Wenger has already given up on the title race because the top 3 teams are in serious contention for the title, especially Liverpool. After their massive wins over ‘the Red devils’ and Aston Villa, Liverpool have made a statement that the race is still on till the end. Back to Arsenal, after a grueling penalty shootout win against Roma followed by thrashing Blackburn 4-0 and thumping Newcastle 3-1, it seems that Arsenal have refocused and are ready at least to get a piece of silverware. Currently they are still in contention of the FA cup and the UEFA Champions League. If they keep up with this kind of play then they are bound to come out with some silverware.
One of the major impacts that has helped Arsenal is the acquisition of the Russian midfielder, Andrei Arshavin. He has taken a very short time to adjust to the English premier league, which for many is the toughest league in the world. He has been able to adjust accordingly and is already scoring splendid goals and setting up the strikers. This acquisition had to be done after an injury to Cesc Fabregas was clearly being felt in the Arsenal midfield. Also, the return of…..read more on arsenal’s form
With a horrifying injury to their most clinical finisher in the team and a heartbreaking last minute draw with Birmingham, the odds look increasingly stacked against Arsenal in their bid to reclaim the English Premier League title from arch rivals Manchester United. Injuries have taken their toll on the team, leading to inconsistent form and play on the field. Results have suffered tremendously as a result and despite establishing a five point lead at the top of the league just 2 weeks ago, this lead has now quickly been reduced to three points after the past weekend’s matches. The players continue to lose their composure on and off the field, with uncharacteristic fights and shocking misses in front of goal.
As their fortunes keep plummeting, manager Arsene Wenger struggles to find a solution to all their problems. While some sympathize with Arsenal and attribute much of their crisis to pure luck, part of the fault lies with the club management not to invest heavily on extra players for greater strength in depth. It is true that many of Arsenal’s young players have great potential and talent, but the early season honeymoon is well and truly over, and the lack of experience and fitness have started to take their toll on willing spirits but unwilling legs.
The transfer window has also long gone, and Wenger might have to dig deeper into the psychological recesses of his protégés to extract miraculous performances for the rest of their season. Their UEFA Champions League hopes also hang in the balance after missing their chance to put incumbent champions AC Milan away in their home tie. With so many obstacles in their way and flagging resources, it might be solely up to Arsene Wenger to find a way out of this crisis. The fans and management of Arsenal have put their faith and hope in the Professor for many years, and will continue to do so. If the club manages to pull this one out of the hat this season, it would be one of Arsene Wenger’s greatest, if not the greatest, achievements in his long and illustrious career.

The 18-time champion of the Premier League, Liverpool, vindicated its leading position on the table this past Saturday by beating Blackburn Rovers 3-1 on the road in an amazing way. The game was well-played by the two teams but the consistency and determination of the Reds were higher than the Rovers in the second half, when they had trouble on their defense in various occasions.
The Reds for their part, played with conviction and its tactical plan was one that gave positive results to Benitez and his players at the end of the game. The Reds did not score any goals in the past two Premier League matches that finished in draws against Fulham and West Ham, but their effort in this game to find their winning strategies, gave them what they deserved, the victory.
This lost was the 5th consecutive for Blackburn in the Premier League, which remains in the relegation zone with only 13 points. Its coach Paul Ince is trying to find the way to win but some injuries on his key players and the clueless tactical plans in the matches have not helped to get a triumph, even when his players are playing hard.
On the other hand, Liverpool is working hard to maintain their pole position at the table and add more points to achieve their big ambition; winning their 19th title of the Premier League. However, we have to mention that Liverpool has also had struggles and difficulties, but even so they have managed to remain at the top.
In Saturday’s game, Blackburn started with more chances than Liverpool during the first 10 minutes of the match, but they couldn’t convert due to the fact that “Pepe” Reina was amazingly saving all of the Blackburn’s attempts. Even so, the Reds didn’t have any clear-cut opportunities during the first 45 minutes and the team’s frustration started to show.
Nevertheless, in the second half things turned around for the Reds, who entered more aggressive and with more conviction than ever. Gerrard and Xavi were doing a great job in the midfield to create spaces and convert opportunities of goals. So at minute 68, Xavi Alonso opened the score with a great goal by an assist from Gerrard. Only 11 minutes later, Benayoun scored again for Liverpool placing a 2-0 in the scoreboard. Then at minute 86, Roque Santa Cruz scored the only goal of the match for Blackburn. Finally, to close the game at minute 90, Gerrard wrapped up the victory by scoring the final goal for Liverpool, finishing 3-1. This victory gives Liverpool a total of 37 points in the table, just one point ahead of Chelsea.
Moreover, Benitez was delighted with his team performance, as even when things were not completely on their side; his team took every chance to win. “We know we can play a lot better than we have been but what gives me confidence is that we can come to places like this and get results, even when we are not at our best,” expressed the Spaniard Coach. “Clearly it was an important three points for us. We are in a very good position and we want to stay there.”
Benitez also stated that players like Mascherano and Gerrard will improve with the time and that key players like Torres and Skrtel will be back to the field soon. That could help to balance the team and given them more support in the attack. The next match of Liverpool will be against Hull City on December 13th at home.
Another interesting weekend of results in the English Premier League. There were some wonderful goals scored as well as some shock results. In total, there were 23 goals scored and 3 red cards given out.
The biggest surprise of the weekend and possibly the shock result of the season was the Arsenal’s capitulation against Hull City at the Emirates. Before I begin to analyse this game, I would like to point out that I’m a mad Arsenal supporter, and have been one for more than a decade now. This can be interpreted in 2 ways. If I praise Arsenal, then it would be seen as being biased. However, if I criticise the team, then the criticism will probably be more credible.
So given that, I have harsh criticism for Arsenal’s disgraceful performance on the weekend. It was not just disgraceful, it was also embarrassing given the quality of the players and the opposition. This is not to say that Hull City does not have a decent team, what I am saying is that a team like Arsenal should not and cannot lose to such a team especially given home advantage and current form.
Once again, football has been proven to be very unpredictable. I was only able to see the first half of Arsenal’s game due to time constraints, thankfully it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. In fact, after watching the first half, I had a feeling that this was not going to be Arsenal’s day. Throughout the entire half, we had not made the most of the opportunities, overplaying our approach to the opposing team’s goal and hence messing up what seemed great opportunities to score. We were simply trying to be too fancy, trying too hard to play a brand of football good on the eye, but not doing the most important thing, which is to score goals.
When I found out that Arsenal ended up losing the game, it was not entirely a shock given their first half performance. The thing that really summed up the game was the fact that Arsenal’s goal came from an own goal. Arsene Wenger had every right to be very angry at the players and we can only hope that Arsenal does not change its playing ways to recover from this very disappointing performance. The midweek Champions League game against Porto will tell.
The other shock result of the weekend was Manchester City’s loss against Wigan. I still can’t believe that this is the same team that recently won 6-0 in the EPL. It all goes to show that money cannot buy you success, at least in the short term. I’m of the opinion that Manchester City will not realise its potential until next season, when it is able to acquire a new group of players with the money they now have due to the takeover. I would recommend all punters to stop betting on the Blues from winning matches until next season when they should be a force.
Talking about that game, how good was the first goal by Valencia? This is up until now, the goal of the season. It flew like a bullet into the goal that the keeper barely had time to react. In fact, he didn’t react at all given the speed of the shot.
Champions League games this week should give us further clues as to which teams seem on track to having successful seasons. Football is a never-ending game and this season is only just warming up. Until next time!
