Arsenal’s Form is back!!!

Arsenal seem to be getting their form back. Unluckily, it’s a little bit too late in the seasons because with few games remaining it would be hard to catch up with the league leaders. Unless some form of miracle happens and the top 3 teams lose points drastically then they should forget the title race.

I think Wenger has already given up on the title race because the top 3 teams are in serious contention for the title, especially Liverpool. After their massive wins over ‘the Red devils’ and Aston Villa, Liverpool have made a statement that the race is still on till the end. Back to Arsenal, after a grueling penalty shootout win against Roma followed by thrashing Blackburn 4-0 and thumping Newcastle 3-1, it seems that Arsenal have refocused and are ready at least to get a piece of silverware. Currently they are still in contention of the FA cup and the UEFA Champions League. If they keep up with this kind of play then they are bound to come out with some silverware.

One of the major impacts that has helped Arsenal is the acquisition of the Russian midfielder, Andrei Arshavin. He has taken a very short time to adjust to the English premier league, which for many is the toughest league in the world. He has been able to adjust accordingly and is already scoring splendid goals and setting up the strikers. This acquisition had to be done after an injury to Cesc Fabregas was clearly being felt in the Arsenal midfield. Also, the return of…..read more on arsenal’s form

Leeds manager Simon Grayson wants one of his players to steal the attention away from star striker Jermaine Beckford in the FA Cup replay against Tottenham at Elland Road.Prolific Beckford burst on to the national stage after poaching the winner against Manchester United in the third round and hogged the headlines after his stoppage-time penalty equaliser at White Hart Lane. The 26-year-old forward, who had withdrawn a transfer request before his heroics against Tottenham, fired his 23rd and 24th goals of the season on Saturday to help Leeds pick up their promotion bid with a 2-0 win against Colchester.A half-smiling Grayson suggested it was now time for someone else to step forward.

2010 Football World Cup

When asked how his players would approach the fourth-round replay, considering Championship football next season is the main aim, Grayson said: “We’ll just go and enjoy it. We’ve not really spoken about it. We’ll just go and enjoy it like we did at Old Trafford.”He has already decided what to tell the players ahead of the clash with Harry Redknapp’s Premier League superstars and he explained the message would be: “Give the best account of yourselves that you can, have no regrets when you come off the pitch and somebody try to be a hero again because Jermaine’s got a lot of the headlines in the last couple of rounds. It would be nice for somebody else to get them for a change.”Leeds have won some new friends under Grayson this season, with an eye-catching display in the Carling Cup defeat to Liverpool in September serving as a warm-up for the upset at Old Trafford and the inspired late rally against Spurs. All three high profile cup ties were screened live on television but Grayson stopped short of agreeing Leeds are ready to shed their reputation as one of the country’s least liked clubs on the back of some favourable national coverage. He said: “I’d like to think we’re trying to do something about it because of the way that we play. There’s been a stigma attached to the football club for the last 30 or 40 years, justifiably so or unjustifiably so, that’s down to people’s opinions.”All I’m trying to do as a manager is create a team that is hard-working, has a desire to succeed and try to entertain as well, and if it means we’re liked, well so be it and if we’re not liked and are winning football matches, then who cares?”Patrick Kisnorbo (Achilles/calf) and Neil Kilkenny (ankle) are doubtful while winger Max Gradel and new loan signings Gary McSheffrey and Shane Lowry are ineligible. Andrew Hughes could be available following illness.Redknapp knows Tottenham will be up against it at Leeds having experienced first hand just what a tough place Elland Road can be.While Leeds may not be the force they were in the 1970s when Redknapp played for West Ham, the Spurs boss knows it will be no easy ride into round five and a clash at Bolton.”Going to Elland Road can’t be as intimidating as when they had Norman Hunter, Jack Charlton, Billy Bremner – that was one of the great football teams, right up there with the very best,” Redknapp said.”But it will be a tough game, they will be difficult opposition and played ever so well at White Hart Lane, even though we should have won the game.”They are a team who can play way above their level, but we are doing well, with just two defeats in 12 games.”With Robbie Keane having joined Celtic on loan, Redknapp confirmed centre-back Michael Dawson would step in as skipper again, given Ledley King will be rested.”Michael Dawson has been captaining the team and has done a good job,” the Spurs boss said. “He signed a new contract, has been in great form, a real leader who leads by example and so he will be captain the team against Leeds.”Striker Roman Pavlyuchenko (groin) is not expected to feature while new signing Eidur Gudjohnsen is unavailable as he was not involved in the original tie. With fellow new recruit Younes Kaboul and Kyle Walker, recalled from Sheffield United, cup-tied, Redknapp admits the deadline day deals have left his options somewhat limited.”We are one or two down in terms of numbers but it will be an opportunity for a couple of youngsters to come and sit on the bench,” he said.”I will speak to (academy manager) John McDermott and (under-18s coach) Alex Inglethorpe to see which players deserve that opportunity.”

Arsene Wenger: The Story Of Mr Arsenal

Arsene Wenger may enjoy an illustrious reputation as the most successful manager in Arsenal’s history, but the man himself enjoyed a much more inauspicious playing career before joining the London club in 1996. Born in Strasbourg, France, Arsene Wenger began playing football for the nearby village football team of FC Duttlenheim before being recruited to play for regional amateur side AS Mutzig. While studying for a Master’s degree in Economics, Wenger played for several amateur football sides before turning professional in 1978, where he played for RC Strasbourg. His career as a professional player was short-lived, however, and upon attaining a manager’s diploma he was appointed coach of the club’s youth team. His first senior managerial post came in 1984 when he was appointed manager for AS Nancy where he spent three seasons before moving to French team AS Monaco in 1987; winning Le Championnat in his first full season in charge. He stayed with the club until the 1994/95 season, rebuffing advances from Bayern Munich and the French national team, but was fired after a poor start to that season. After Monaco, he moved to Japan to coach J-League side, Grampus Eight where he enjoyed a successful eighteen months. Wenger returned to Europe in October 1996 where, after becoming friends with then Arsenal vice-chairman, David Dein, he took over the reins at Highbury and has continued through the club’s move to the new Emirates stadium. Wenger had replaced the Scottish manager Bruce Rioch and in his first season led the London side to third place in the English Premier Division, missing out on Champions League qualification on goal difference. The following season, Wenger and Arsenal won both the Premiership and the FA cup, thus achieving only the second double in the club’s history. However, despite some high-profile signings, Arsenal would be trophy-less until the 2000/01 season where they would once again capture the League and FA Cup double. Following on from this, the club won the FA Cup again in 2003 and the Premiership in 2003/04; the latter achieved without a single defeat. Another FA Cup win followed in 2005, but despite a measure of success in domestic competitions, Arsenal have failed to successfully crack the European stage. The closest the club have come was a 2-1 loss to Barcelona in the 2005/06 final. Wenger now enjoys a reputation as one of the best managers in the modern game, and is renowned for his talent of unearthing and nurturing unknown players of potential. Wenger is credited with discovering players such as Liberia’s George Weah who later became FIFA World Player of the Year with AC Milan and has brought young, raw talent to Arsenal in the shape of Thierry Henry, Nicolas Anelka, Patrick Viera, Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie among others. But while Wenger has made occasional big money signings – most notably the recent signing of Russian international, Andrei Arshavin – his net spend when compared to other Premiership managers pales in comparison, and has been estimated at around £5million per season since he joined the club. As well as a talent for spotting and bringing in young talent, Wenger can also be credited as resurrecting the careers of veteran footballers, such as Dennis Bergkamp, who enjoyed his best years under the Frenchman, while his support of Tony Adams in 1996 has been lauded as a key factor in the player’s rehabilitation and return to form after alcoholism. His dietary and training regimes have also been credited for prolonging the playing careers of defenders Nigel Winterburn, Lee Dixon and Martin Keown over the years. With an abundance of young talent at his disposal, such as Mexico’s Carlos Vela, England’s Kieran Gibbs and Theo Walcott, and backed with established professionals such as William Gallas, Gael Clichy and Emmanuel Adebayor, Arsenal and Arsene Wenger will continue to be a threat to all in the Premiership for seasons to come.

Arsenal needs to end slide against Liverpool

Arsenal needs to end slide against Liverpool
Since climbing to the top of the Premier League, Arsenal has taken only one point from three games, slipped to third and been knocked out of the FA Cup. Now Arsene Wenger’s young players face a tough home game against reviving Liverpool, and another defeat could leave them with little chance of winning a title they last captured six years ago.

Gianfranco Zola Named West Ham United New Manager

The recent news regarding the retired Italian footballer Gianfranco Zola becoming the new West Ham United manager has brought many smiles and positive thoughts to the English team fans.

Zola’s professional career background is very extend as he played for many senior Italian clubs including; Napoli, Parma and Cagliari but he spent his longest period outside Italy when he played for Chelsea from 1996 to 2003 where he achieved with the team two FA Cup victories, one League cup win in 1998, one UEFA Cup win and the 1998 European Super Cup besides being voted as Chelsea’s greatest player ever.

At the press conference with the London media Zola was very happy with his new task with the Blues and he expressed that “Football is joy. The best part of the game comes when you are enjoying what you’re doing,” he said. “So my first target will be to make it as enjoyable as possible for the players.”

He also pressed on the issue that his 20-year of experience have make him believe in playing offensive football as well as trust the hard work and a deep commitment but the most important thing is to make the players feel comfortable among each other and the possibility to talk openly as a group with a common goal.

Besides the Italian other candidates were also interviewed for the position, along some of the names mentioned there were; the Italian Roberto Donadoni as well as the Croatian Coach Slaven Bilic and John Collins, but at the end the Blues chose Zola who became West Ham’s twelfth manager with a three year contract. The former 42-year-old Italian forward and incredible talented striker retired only in 2005 and immediately began his coaching career back in his home land.  Zola’s mission ahead is not easy and he is very aware of this fact particularly due to his short experience managing clubs which has been one of the main critics he has received in the short period since the news became public. Another problem could be that the Premier League season is already on course with most English teams already in position with their moves in acquiring new players and new directors working for a common goal.

Over the weekend West Ham’s encounter with the West Bromwich Albion did not go very well as they lost by 3 to 2, one goal difference that was a real disappointment for many fans. But let’s not forget Zola has not yet taken full charge of the team and this will happen until next week, he will then have the time to plan and guide his players in the way he trusts to be more suitable for the strategies he will implement to win this year’s title in the Premier League.

Manchester United – What Prospects For 2009/10?

There are many reasons why Manchester United are the most successful football team in England – and have been for as long as most people can remember. And especially since the development of the Premier League, the club has entered an era of almost unprecedented success.
The Old Trafford Stadium keeps expanding – its current capacity is over 76,000 – and the demand for tickets shows no sign of slowing down, despite the economic downturn.
Much has been made, quite rightly, of the influence over the club of the legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. A blunt, at times irascible Scotsman, Ferguson has been at ‘The Theatre of Dreams’ since November, 1986 – a tenure almost unprecedented in any era of the game. He has managed to stay hungry, determined and, most importantly, in total command during that time and will, when he does eventually decide to stand down, undoubtedly be hard to replace.
Ferguson’s main attribute, for me, has been to keep United at the top whilst continually changing his team. There has been one spell – between 2002 and 2005 – when the club ‘only’ had an FA Cup to display from the major competitions; but even then they could hardly be said to have languished in mediocrity.
The manager has had that priceless ability of being able to move players in and out of his squad, without it disrupting team spirit or damaging the pattern of play. Additionally, he’s shown a completely single-minded approach to moving out players he thought would be possibly past their best or simply not up to standard. Yes, he’s made a few mistakes – Kleberson, Veron, Taibi, Djemba Djemba, Jordi Cruyff – but some of those could realistically have been expected to have been successful. Kleberson was the midfield hub of a Brazilian team that won the World Cup, for goodness sake.
However, I do happen to think that Sir Alex has a hard season in prospect. Not one where United are in danger of plummeting down to fifth, or anything like that. But I do feel things could be a little more problematic when it comes to running away with the league title again.
Now, I’m not just saying that because Ronaldo has flown away to his spiritual home – I’m sure they’ll suit each other perfectly. Although a player of his skill – and the number of goals he scored – will not easily be found, it’s certain the staff at Old Trafford will bring at least one player in to take the winker’s place.
My problems are elsewhere. I do think there are a number of players who are just about past their use-by date. Ryan Giggs might have been PFA Player of the Year but we all know that was a sentimental award – unless he really was exceptional in the 15 league games he started during the season! Clearly, Giggs, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes cannot be expected to play much next season.
Then there are others about whom you can’t be really sure they’re going to be quite good enough. Darren Fletcher has come on enormously in the last two years but the same can’t really be said for Nani, Anderson, Ji-Sung Park and one or two more. It was abundantly clear in the Champions’ League Final that Barcelona’s midfield was inordinately superior to Manchester’s. Owen Hargreaves, hopefully for United, will return to something like his best form – but Michael Carrick still looks a bit of a ‘flat track bully’ to me,
And, of course, there are the classic Berbatov and Rooney problems. I don’t suppose I’m alone in wondering what on earth Wayne Rooney was doing spending half of last season stuck out on the left ‘doing a job for the team’ and looking a shadow of the player we all think he could be. And the manager’s faith in the expensive Berbatov was clearly demonstrated in the last few vital matches of the season when the player barely got picked. Personally, for all Tevez’s enthusiasm and running around, the best pairing up front for Manchester United has to be the intelligence of Berbatov – who did have more ‘assists’ than any other United player last year – with the brilliant Rooney playing in his best position alongside him.
I am looking forward to the 2009/2010 season in the Premier League. Manchester United can be sure of playing their fast, flowing football and will, of course, be right there at the end. I do think, though, that, if they are going to achieve the amazing feat of four titles in a row, the manager has got quite a lot of hard work to do.
