Scratch Golf – How I Got There

I was frustrated with my golf game to say the least. I worked hard at it however I couldn’t get any better than an 18 handicap.I watch the Golf Channel and read Golf Digest religiously – there was something missing in my golf swing and I could not put my finger on it.I was your typical bogey golfer – if I started my round of golf on a good note I usually did pretty well and would shoot mid to high 80’s. If the wheels on my golf swing began to wobble I would find myself tinkering with my golf swing on the golf course – a recipe for disaster! My golf swing was far from perfect but functional. I had incorporated an early move in my backswing that allowed me to swing the club more to the inside and at the same time fan the club face open. I learned this move because if I timed my impact just right, I seemed to hit the golf ball farther. However this move in my golf swing was hit or miss – sometimes I smoked the golf ball down the middle of the fairway – and sometimes I snap hooked it into the woods. So ended my 2006 golf season and still no progress – handicap 18 and holding steady. The 2006-07 winter here in New England had been unusually cold, snowy, and LONG! – It was now spring and my golf swing still rusty from the long winter layoff.Needless to say, I was anxious to start my 2007 golf season with high hopes of really making an impact on lowering my golf handicap from the 18 I had been sitting at for so long. Then in early May 2007 my brother in law told me about this golf swing move he learned from an old dusty golf book that had done wonders for him – a move he said puts his golf swing on plane early in the swing. What is this move you ask??Read on…The early backward wrist break! As I began to practice the early backward wrist break my golf swing felt very weird. I thought “this can’t be right”. However I stayed with it and continued practicing this early backward wrist break.I gradually began to notice the golf club felt much lighter as I swung…I also began to find it easier to drop the golf club into the “slot” during my downswing allowing me to really attack the golf ball from the inside. Then I suddenly realized, “I’ve been yanking the golf club way too far to the inside at the start of my backswing, and now my golf swing is on plane!”"This is why the golf club feels so much lighter; I am now swinging the golf club on plane!”I noticed a more penetrating ball flight with my irons AND my woods…The golf ball was now exploding of my clubface! Also, I noticed the golf ball was sounding different coming off my club face – it sounded like – “click”.And this story gets even better…Five days after learning the early backward wrist break I carded my first ever hole-in-0ne!To read the story on my hole-in-one, simply Google: “john lynch hole-in-one” spelled exactly as is without the quotes.I quickly developed much more confidence in my golf swing – I now knew where the golf ball was going. This confidence transferred to my short game and I began to score on the golf course.I was now thoroughly enjoying the game of golf!I was no longer happy with pars; I now wanted birdies and eagles! In three short months my handicap had already dropped to a 10 – that’s 8 strokes! My dream came true in May 2008 when my handicap dropped to 0 – scratch golf!!All because of this one move early in my backswing!I can truly say without a shadow of a doubt the early backward wrist break has totally transformed my golf game and I wanna shout this out to the world!!One year ago I was an 18 handicap, I am now a scratch golfer!!Hit ‘em Long and Straight!John Lynch

Basic Chip Shot Golf Tips

It’s a short low running approach golf shot with overspin or bite used in approaching the green. Other terms used for chipping are:Chip In – When your ball rolls into the cup after chipping, you hole out with a chip shot.Chip-and-run – A chip shot intended to run the ball after landing.Chili-dip – A mishit chip shot, the clubhead hitting the ground well before it hits the ball. If you wonder: when chipping? The answer is: in every situation within a few yards of the green. Chip Shot Golf Sequence

Basic Chip Shot Golf Tips This step by step chip shot checklist will help to drill and improve your chip shot techniques. 1. Take a 6-, 7-, 8- or 9-iron or pitching wedge. 2. Use your normal grip for this chip shot. 3. Address the ball with a narrow stance. The ball placed more towards back foot. 4. Open your feet and shoulders a little bit, not too wide. 5. Lean your body a bit to the left of the pin. 6. Keep your shoulders and your wrists firm, like you should hit with a putter. 7. Hands ahead of the ball, inside your left thigh. Your left hand has to block the vision of your left knee. Right hand for lefthanded golfers. 8. Lean your weight to your front foot. 9. Aim the face of your lady golf club towards the target. 10. Make a slow tempo swing with your arms and shoulders. Like you want to put. Your arms and shoulders move like a pendulum clock. 11. Touch the ground – before you chip the ball. Crisps the grass. Accelerate through the ball and hit it off the toe of the club. Keep your hand ahead of the ball at impact. 12. The follow through of a chip shot should have the same length as your back swing, as mentioned before, like a pendulum clock. A short back swing causes short distance chipping, a long one a longer traject. 13. The golf club lifts the ball up in the air. Practice a lot, and you can make a perfect chip shot on the fairway within a reasonable distance to the pin. 14. And: Don’t look up to early! I think that’s my most important tip for chip shot golf.

Four Golf Tips To Achieve Distance and Pinpoint Accuracy

If you carefully scrutinize a good player’s swing—a player whose golf handicap is in the single digits—you’ll notice something odd. There’s a flat spot at the bottom of the swing arc, just as the club strikes the ball. This flatness isn’t an optical illusion. It’s real. And it’s significant. Launch angle is critical to generating power and accuracy from the tee box. It also fosters solid contact . Every tee shot has an optimum launch angle off the tee—no matter what the club. This angle depends almost entirely on clubhead speed at impact. Driving the ball off the tee with the right clubhead speed and launch angle produces a ball flight that helps golfers gain distance and achieve accuracy. Unfortunately, players with high golf handicaps don’t always understand the relationship between clubhead speed and launch angle.

Defining Launch Angle

Launch angle, as I’ve explained in many golf tips, is the angle at which a ball leaves the clubface. Launch angle results primarily from two factors: ball speed and ball spin. Correctly adjusting one or both increases driving distance and accuracy. That in turn helps cut some strokes from your scores and your golf handicap. In other words, if you really want to bomb one down the fairway, you must hit the ball at the perfect launch angle. Below are some keys to doing so:

1. Check Your Grip For Square Contact

To drive your ball straight and far, you must make square contact with the ball. To do that, you need the right grip—one allowing you to return the clubhead to the ball squarely time after time after time. The best grip for that is a neutral one. A weak grip turns the hands too far to the left (right, for a left-hander) producing a slice. A strong grip turns the hands too far to the right (left, for a left-hander), generating a hook. But a neutral grip aligns the hands with the club head, increasing your chances of making solid contact at the optimum launch angle.

2. Get A Feel For Impact

In addition to a neutral grip, develop a feel for impact. Here’s a good drill for that:

Set up a chair in front of you. Position the back of the chair so that it’s aligned where you would position the ball on the tee, with the back facing forward. Assume your address position. Turn away from the chair just as you would on your backswing. Swing down, hitting the back of the chair squarely with the palm of your right hand (left for lefties).

This drill ingrains the feel of impact and develops a good turn away from the ball—just like they teach in golf lessons.

3. Balance Address To Predetermine Launch Angle

Your address position predetermines your position at impact. It’s critical you have a balanced address. If your weight is too far forward, you increase your chances of hitting the ball with an upward, glancing blow. If your weight is set too far back, you’ll hit down on the ball, popping it up. Distribute your weight evenly and you’ll hit the ball squarely.

4. Ease Into Swing

Staying on the correct swing plane is essential to hitting longer, more accurate drives. To determine if you’re on the proper swing plane, hold the club in front of you, chest high, with your arms fully extended. Lazily, begin swinging the club back and forth. Lower the club until it starts swishing the ground. That’s the proper swing plane for that club. It’s also a good tempo to play at and swing at.

These four tips won’t turn you into Phil Mickelson. Nor will they eliminate the need for some people to take golf lessons. But they will help you gain additional yardage off the tee and achieve pinpoint accuracy consistently. If you’re serious about lowering your golf handicap, gaining extra yardage is something worth attaining.

i stopped playing solf ball this year and now I’m playing golf.. i haven’t played golf at least 5 years so now i feel like I’m a rookie again (use to play it all the time).. I’m interested in knowing some tips? to driving to putting and holding the clubs right? i was driving last night, a dude came up to me and said to me THIS ISN’T BASEBALL, you will never hit the ball straight.. well i proved him wrong, i hit fairway 7 out of 10 times and hitting the ball 238 yards but the 3 time i sliced it big time!!! Any help!! Thanks

Golf Tips to Cure your Slice and Improve your Ball Striking

The two most common problems golfers seem to struggle with are a) slicing the ball and b) inconsistent ball striking. Perhaps you blister it right off the sweet spot one time, and the next you hit it fat (behind the ball) or thin (on top of the ball) even though you are absolutely sure your set up, grip and swing were virtually identical between those same two shots. Or maybe you find yourself aiming way to the left (if you are right handed) hoping that by the time your ball finishes its impressive banana-shaped flight it will end up somewhere near the fairway. Then, low and behold, you line up like that only to hit it straight into the trees. After struggling with the same two problems for many years I have found what I believe is the root cause of both problems, and would like to share with you what has helped my golf game immensely and hopefully can help yours also.

We all know that the key to a consistent golf shot is returning the club head to a square position at the point of impact. If your club face is open at impact, the ball will slice. If it is closed at impact, you will hook your shot. Also, if you do not return the club head so it contacts your ball cleanly on the ground you will either be hitting fat or thin, neither of which you want to do. Although a lot of things can contribute to those problems the one thing that I have noticed in my own game and in observing others who have these two problems is this: too much lower body movement during the golf swing. Very simply put if anything below your waistline is “loosey-goosey” when you are swinging the golf club the likelihood of making good shots consistently is almost nil.

Watch the professionals on television some weekend and concentrate on their knees while they swing, especially when they are hitting a driver off the tee. You will immediately see that no matter how hard they swing, their lower body is very, very still during their entire swing motion. In some cases the distance between the inside of their two knees does not even change until after the club impacts the ball. Try to catch the ladies tour on television and watch their knees. Since many of them wear skirts when they play the lack of lateral movement in their knees is readily apparent.
When you sway back and then forward, or if your hips move laterally more than an inch or two at most when you shift your weight you are probably too “noisy” with your lower body when you swing. Fixing this problem does not require a lot of strength or special skills, but it does require getting used to what will at first feel like an unnatural swing, but one that will be your best friend once you get accustomed to it and your muscle memory is trained to do it automatically.

One practice drill that you can do in your back yard to learn to shift your weight, instead of sway it, that does not even require hitting balls is to get a couple of quarter-inch diameter wood rods that are long enough to be waist high after you push them into the ground (3 to 3 1/2 feet long). You can buy them for very little at your favorite hardware store. Push one into the ground about an inch to the right of the back part of your right foot when you take a stance like you are addressing the ball, and one about an inch to the left of the back part of your left foot. If you have set it up correctly you are now pretending to address a golf ball with your normal stance, and you have two wood rods pushed into the ground in such a way that the top of each rod is about even with your waist and they are positioned just outside the heel of both your shoes respectively. Then take some practice swings. You should be able to make a complete swing without touching the rods with either of your hips or with the outside of your knees. This drill will also help you learn to make a full turn in your follow through while maintaining good balance. Do not stiffen up so much that you do not follow through. Just concentrate on shifting your weight to the inside of your back foot on your backswing, then shifting it to the inside of your front foot on your forward swing, while making a full turn at your waist without moving laterally during any part of the swing.

After a while you will be shifting your weight back correctly on your backswing but you will not be swaying your body when you do so. Likewise you will be shifting your weight forward correctly on your downswing but you will not be swaying in that direction. Just remember: shifting does not mean swaying! Now the concept of “coiling” your weight back and shifting it forward will make sense. Many golf tips will refer to coiling against the inside of your back leg on your take away, but for years I had no idea what that meant so I was swaying. Now, I shift, and my game has improved considerably.

Once you get used to how this new swing feels head to the practice range and hit a bucket of balls with your favorite iron without regard for distance. Any iron will do but a five or six iron would be a good choice if you are not sure where to begin. Just get used to your new swing while you hit real shots. At first, slow down both your backswing and forward swing. You are not trying to set any distance records. You just need to get the feel of your new swing. As you begin to get used to your new swing, start swinging at your normal pace, but do not swing any harder than you did before applying these techniques. If the driving range allows you to hit off real grass go ahead and push your wood rods in the ground and hit some shots that way.

Keeping your lower body “quiet” applies to all the shots you take whether it is a driver off the tee or a wedge from 15 feet off the green. By limiting your lower body movement and learning to shift, not sway, you will consistently return your club head squarely to the ball, thereby eliminating slicing and inconsistent ball striking.

Golf Tips – 4 Tips Every Golfer Should Abide by

Golf Tips – 4 Tips Every Golfer Should Abide By

Golf is all about giving yourself the absolute best opportunities to make shots onto the green. This is done by keeping the ball on the fairway, which means that accuracy should be one of the focal points of your game. You can increase your accuracy when playing golf by keeping in mind the following points:

1. No matter where your ball is, you should always be aiming for a target. Developing accuracy and playing with a strategic mindset means choosing a target to shoot at, even if you cannot see the hole.

By choosing a small target, such as an object or a location on the fairway, visualize the ball heading in that exact direction. This technique has been proven to help thousands of golfers to hit more accurate shots in line with their target.

2. Just because you are hitting the ball from the tee, that does not mean that the driver should be used each and every time. Yes, the driver will hit the ball the farthest, but it also has the least accuracy of every club in your bag. You may be facing a shot with a narrow fairway, or perhaps risking advanced hazards on each side of the fairway.

Either way, your driver may not be the best choice. Instead, consider using your woods, preferably a 3-wood or the 5-wood. You could even use an iron when hitting the ball from the tee it deemed necessary.

3. Learn to take your ego out of the game when necessary. Always take the safe shot if you are unsure of what strategy to use. Trying to be the golf hero of the day may ruin your score. Have the mindset to simply keep the ball on the green and finish the job with your putter.

4. Regardless of playing skill level, all golf players who have been involved in this sport for any amount of time have one thing in common: We all have a “lucky club”. Beginner golfers may not have such an experience yet, but in time you will. We like to call it our “go to” club. It is the one club in our bag that we consistently hit the ball well with.

Always use your lucky club whenever you have a very important shot to make. Remember, different clubs are designed to hit the ball in different manners, but any club will work for any shot, most of the time. For example, even if your tee off is on a par-5 hole, but the shot absolutely must go well, and your lucky club is a 5-wood, then use it! Does the 9-iron do the trick for you every time, regardless of the circumstances? Use it!

9 Golf Tips For Every Part of Your Game

Are you looking for golf tips for every part of your golf game? If so, then you are in the right place. We are going to give you 3 golf tips on how to hit better drives, 3 golf tips on how to hit better irons and 3 golf tips on how to hit better chip shots.

3 Golf Tips on How to Hit Better Drives

Everyone is in love with the fact of trying to get as much distance as they can from their driver. Some players are even obsessed to the point, it hurts their scores. A test with tour players was done years ago on this subject. They had them hit their drive. If it was in the fairway, fine. If it was in the rough, they had them play that ball. In addition, they put in play another ball that was in the fairway but thirty yards behind their tee shot in the rough. Believe it or not, these players scored better from the fairway thirty yards behind the original ball in the rough! That proves how important hitting it in the fairway is for all of us. Here is how you can hit better drives:

1. Make sure your ball position is correct. Many amateurs play their driver to far forward in their stance in an attempt to help the ball in the air.

2. Use a full swing but only swing 80%. This means if a full swing is normally 100mph then you are looking to stay in balance and swing at 80mph.

3. Make sure that you have the correct shaft in your driver. Many players have pre-conceived ideas that they need to hit a certain flex shaft. I would make my decision more strictly based on the ball flight.

3 Golf Tips on How to Hit Better Irons

Many players do not believe that they can improve their iron play by slowing down and making sure they have the proper club in their hand. Remember the closer that you are able to hit your irons the shorter your putts will be and then you will look like a better putter! Improve how you hit your irons with these 3 tips:

1. As simple as it sounds most players do not know the average distance that they hit each golf club. The key word here is average. How long you hit your seven-iron one time (downhill and downwind) simply does not matter. I would rather brag about the low score I shot after the round than the long seven-iron that I hit on the eighth hole!

2. Take the time while you are on the golf course to find the yardage to the front and back of the green as well as the distance to the hole.

3. Choose the club that allows you to make a full swing. This takes away many variables that can go wrong during your swing.

3 Golf Tips on How to Improve Your Chip Shots

Improving your short game and your chip shots is the quickest way to lower your scores behind improving your putting. Many players do not practice it as much because it is not as glamorous as trying to bang out the long drives. Even the best players miss greens so if you cannot chip the ball around the green, you will not be able to ever score very well. The short game of golf is where you really need to practice, so check out the following 3 tips:

1. Any time that you can hit a low shit that runs the ball up to the hole as opposed to flying it all of the way there, do it. This gives you more room for error and percentage-wise you will get you closer to the hole for the next shot, unless you make the chip shot! Do not be scared to use an eight, seven or even a five iron to get the distance that you need.3

2. Hold your finish until the ball has stopped rolling. Use this time to monitor your balance and evaluate the shot.

3. Know without a doubt where you would like the ball to land. If you claim to have trouble visualizing shots then explain where you want to land it out loud. This will accomplish the same thing.

Implement these golf tips into your game and you will see your scores go down and you will have something to talk about in the locker room!

The Importance of Balance on your Golf Swing

Mastering the art of the golf swing could be complicated and challenging, and you are most probably trying to improve yours. There are a couple of very simple errors in balance that most people make but can easily be avoided. Here are two simple tips on improving your balance and golf swing, as well as correct the basic slip-ups that you could be doing.

1. A Good Setup, A Good Balance, A Good Swing

A good tip for improving your golf swing would be improving your setup. A lot of golfers do not have a good balance because they started off from a bad setup. If you have a good and solid setup, you would be able to keep balanced as you swing. Maintaining your balance would give you a solid swing plane as well as a good pivot. Make sure keep your whole body under control during your setup so you could improve your balance and swing.

2. Swinging Too Hard

Although having great distance is essential, having perfect control of your swing is equally important. What usually happens is since you want distance, you give your all you can when you swing. This causes you to wheel around and lose your balance, as you swing too hard. What you would need to do is trust your club. It is already designed to send the ball to great lengths so you would need to focus on making your swing as solid, as steady and as balanced as possible to stay in the fairway.
