Golf Tips on Hitting Solid Irons

To improve iron play fast—and chop strokes off your golf handicap—look to your hands. It’s hard to hit quality shots if you don’t use your hands correctly. As a serious golfer looking to improve, you must learn what role your hands play in hitting iron shots. If you do, you’ll boost your game to a new level and you’ll whittle strokes from your golf handicap as well.

Many weekend golfers learn to hold a club either by taking golf lessons or reading golf tips in magazines or books. What they may not learn from this golf instruction is that the way you hold the club impacts on how you cock your wrists at the top of the swing. That in turn determines clubface position at impact. If your clubface isn’t square at impact, you’ll slice or pull your irons.

Weak Grip/Flat Wrist

If you’re right-handed, a weak grip encourages a cocking mechanism that produces a flat left wrist at the top of the swing. A weak grip for a right-handed golfer features the back of the left-hand pointing to the target and the “V” formed by your thumb and forefinger pointing toward your left ear. With a weak grip, you must keep your left wrist from cupping to maintain the clubface on line during the swing.

If your left wrist cups, you’re asking for trouble. You’ll rotate the clubface too far open on the backswing and throw the clubface off the correct delivery path. Only players blessed with ultra-fast hand speed, like Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson can square up the clubface at impact from this position. Making adjustments like this for usually spells trouble for players of all golf handicaps.

Strong Grip/Cupped Wrist

If you’re a right-handed player, a stronger grip accommodates more of a left wrist cup at the top. A stronger grip for a right handed golfer is one in which the back of the left hand for a right handed player points more toward the sky, and the target and the “V” formed by the thumb and forefinger points toward your shoulder. With this grip you must avoid flattening the left wrist too much as you hinge the iron to the top.

A stronger grip plus a flat left wrist at the top usually results in a laying off of the club or swinging too far inside. Either way, you must make adjustments to get the club back on plane and on the correct delivery path. If you don’t, your clubface won’t be square at impact. Again, making adjustments during your swing spells trouble for players of all golf handicaps, unless you have super fast hands.

Golf Instructors Favor Stronger Grip

Many golf instructors favor a stronger grip for weekend golfers. It’s a little harder to learn to control, but when paired with a slight left wrist cup, it provides for better overall club control and allows for more hinge. That in turn creates more lag in the backswing to downswing transition, generating more clubhead speed and increasing power.

For even more power, grip the club with a slightly stronger grip. To do that, make the “V” created by the left thumb and foreigner point toward the right shoulder, with the palm of the right hand facing the target. Be careful though. Too strong a grip results in a hook.

Your grip is personal. You should adopt one that feels comfortable to you. There have been as many great players with weak grips as there have been with strong grips. The key is to match the right grip with the correct type of wrist cocking mechanism, making it easier to return the clubface to the ball square. Do that and you’ll not only hit more solid irons, you’ll do it more consistently and you’ll chop strokes off your golf handicap.

5 Golf Tips To Lower Your Scores

So you want to lower your handicap?

You want that to happen this season?

You are tired of spending money on new Clubs, Gadgets, Balls… and more Balls?

So let me give you five tips for 2009. This isn’t Golf Instruction, (I’m not even going to mention the technical elements of your golf swing).

Just Five golf tips to lowers your scores and help you enjoy your game more.

Five golf tips from my observations as a golfer.

TIP ONE – PLAY BOGEY GOLF

If you have never shot under 90 then you have got to, and I mean absolutely “Got To”, try playing the course for bogey. A Par 3 is a 4, a Par 4 is a 5 and a Par 5 is a 6. Get It? Just try it a for a couple of rounds. I dare you. I see so many people trying to hit to the extreme on every shot. Trying to carry a lake from a sloping lie out of a divot. Trying to hit a long iron to a narrow green with bunkers left and right. Stop doing it! Lay up, but lay up to a distance for a shot that you are much happier to take on.

Even on a long Par 3 of say 210 yards. Try hitting a wedge. Hitting another wedge to the green. Then two putt for a bogey. There is no shame in it. At the same time you will master your wedges more, and that’s where the money is made.

TIP TWO – LOOSE THE LONG IRONS

I have hardly ever played with anyone that could consistently hit either their 3 iron or 4 iron. I was one of them. So take them out of the bag and replace them with wedges. I carry 5 wedges in my bag, because when you get 100 Yards and in, it gets really difficult to hit from 90, 80, 70 and 60 Yards with only one or two wedges. You have to be a master. Which none of us mere mortal golfers are. After all that’s why you are still reading.

TIP THREE – KNOW YOUR DISTANCES

And I’m talking about every club in your bag. My game changed immensely, when I bought myself a range finder. For the first time I realized that I really had NO IDEA, how far I hit any of my clubs. So I grabbed my clubs, went to a local park and, using my new toy. I hit ball after ball after ball, just to get a real idea of the distance I hit each club.

Now PLEASE LISTEN. I’m talking my average distance per club. Not my best distance. I don’t want to be trying to hit 100% with every shot with every club. We are looking for consistency here. Do you know your distances? NO. Then grab a tape measure and get down the park.

TIP FOUR – NEGATIVE THINKING

I see and here so much negative thinking from a lot of golfers out there on the courses. The trouble is. It spoils their shots and that in turn spoils their game.

My Father is a fine example of this. He will walk up to a putt of 18 inches to 2 feet, and without fail he will say something like. “I hate these ones. I always miss them”

Guess what he does next folks. Yep! He misses it. We have all done it. Some of us still are. We look at the carry over the lake and in our mind we say “Please don’t go in the lake” But here’s how it works. Guess what the last thing our mind heard as were addressing that ball?” “IN THE LAKE” Without fail, that’s where it will end up.

Stop looking at Lakes, Ponds, Bunkers, etc. Only see your landing spot and visualize your balls flight to that point. If you really are not sure if you can carry the lake. Then you clearly did not READ TIP ONE

TIP FIVE – STOP BUYING NEW CLUBS

I have the same set of Mizuno Irons (EZ Comp circa 2000), that I’ve had for years. I wouldn’t change them for anything. Well maybe for some….NO GET A GRIP STEPHEN! New clubs aren’t going to make your game better. Not until you have got through Tips One to Five and mastered them. Yet I see guys every year with “THE LATEST GREATEST, SUPEREST DUPEREST” Driver in their Bag. They can a hit a ball into the trees with a lot more power this year. If you are going to spend money on ANYTHING this year. Make it some type of lesson.

Go to your local club and sign up for some One-On-One lessons with the Pro, or try out one of the many On-Line golf instruction programs that are available. In fact I’d rather you spent the ‘New Driver’ money on , a couple of books, a couple of DVD’s and a decent swing tempo gadget! You’re going to get far more out of these.

So get out there at least 2 times a week this year. Try my tips and let me know how you get on. Best Wishes to you all and thanks for reading.

Use These Five Quick Golf Tips To Improve Your Game Today

We get asked all of the time for quick golf tips. The question usually comes from someone who has to play in a corporate golf tournament or they are someone who does not play often and they are going on vacation and will have a chance to play a round at a prestigious golf course and are looking for quick golf tips. Here is a list of five free quick golf tips to enjoy your corporate event or vacation.

1. If you have any time before your event to practice, you do need to take advantage of this. Current golf instruction will say that you should spend twice as much time on your short game as you do your full swing. I know, I know, I know. How are you going to get the ball to the green? Without much time before the event, you will improve faster by spending time on getting the ball in the hole as opposed getting the ball just close to the green. If you do not get to play often, chances are that you hit many of your irons close to the same distance. Unless you have time for some golf instruction, this will not be fixed in a short period of time. Get the feel for and mechanics of chipping, pitching and putting.

2. When it comes time to play your round, make sure you loosen up before the round. By loosening up your muscles, you are allowing yourself to relax and prepare your body for the athletic movements you will be making during your round. Your time should also include some time on the practice putting green. You will want to become familiar with the speed of the greens.

3. Grip pressure and arm tension is something that all golfers should monitor during every single swing. Your shoulders and your forearms should not feel like they have any tension in them at all. To give you an example, if you take your grip and hold the club out in front of you with the shaft parallel to the ground. If your shoulders and forearms are relaxed enough then the golf club should drop to the ground. This is the feeling of how relaxed your shoulders and forearms should be during your golf swing.

4. Balance is an underestimated part of the golf swing by most amateurs. In your setup, you will need to check your balance from side to side (left to right) as well as from front to back. You can do this by simply swaying side to side until you feel balanced and do the same from front to back. This will allow you to find your perfect balance. Now the key is once this is found you may need to move closer to the ball or farther away from the ball to stay in balance.

5. Once you start playing your round of golf, leave your ego at home and make and aggressive swing at a conservative target. What does this mean? Do not always go flag hunting on every hole. With not playing very often you are not going to hit every shot where you are looking. Increase your chances of playing better by aiming at the largest part of the green or the part of the green you are most comfortable with trying to hit a golf shot.

Assuming you do not have much time until your event, use these five quick golf tips to have a successful day. To conclude the five quick golf tips, let me give you the best of all of the quick golf tips of them all. Make sure that you HAVE FUN! It is just a game.
